Letter to the Minister of Justice:
End blasphemy law in Greece

Professor Nikolaos Paraskevopoulos,
Minister of Justice, Transparency and Human Rights

[prot. no. 314 /03.02.2015] 2 February 2015

Subject: Abolition of Articles 198 & 199 of the Penal Code, on blasphemy

Mr. Minister,

Please accept our congratulations on your assumption of office. We wish you success throughout your tenure.

The Humanist Union of Greece (HUG) is an association founded in January 2010. As a member of the European Humanist Federation (EHF – http://humanistfederation.eu/) it aims to promote a secular Europe, defend equal treatment for all, regardless of religion or belief and to combat religious conservatism and religious privileges in Greece and the rest of Europe. The HUG Spokesperson Panayote Dimitras is honored to have been elected to the EHF Executive Bureau (http://humanistfederation.eu/about.php?page=executive-board). The EHF is recognized as an official participant in the dialogue with the European institutions, as specified in Article 17 of the Treaty of Lisbon.

Almost simultaneously with your assumption of office, the European Humanist Federation together with the International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU – http://iheu.org) launched a worldwide campaign for the abolition of all laws with which blasphemy is prosecuted (http://end-blasphemy-laws.org). On the website there is an article on the situation in Greece regarding the existence of the criminal provisions punishing blasphemy (Articles 198 and 199 CC) used by the judiciary in recent prosecutions and convictions (http://end-blasphemy-laws.org/countries/europe/greece/).

With this letter and in the context of our global campaign we ask you and the government to proceed by immediately repealing Sections 198 and 199 CC.

Please let us know your answer, which we will publish as we will publish this letter.

Yours sincerely,
Panayote Dimitras
HUG Spokesperson
and member of the EHF Executive Bureau
